Maine solar cancellation rights

3 business days — 32 M.R.S.A. §§ 4661–4671 (Consumer Solicitation Sales Act; 2026 LD1964 expressly added solar energy equipment and NEB contracts to 'merchandise' under the Act); plus FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429 (3 business days, ≥$25 home sales).

The law

  • 32 M.R.S.A. §§ 4661–4671 (Consumer Solicitation Sales Act)
  • 10 M.R.S. ch. 221 (Warranties for Sale and Installation of Solar Energy Equipment; §§ 1491–1494 — violation = UTPA violation)
  • LD1964, ch. 575, PL 2026 (emergency, eff. Mar 19, 2026): 10 M.R.S. § 1250-M (false representation in electricity-product sales = UTPA violation); 35-A M.R.S. § 3218 (standard written disclosure for sale/lease of solar equipment, eff. June 1, 2026)
  • 5 M.R.S.A. §§ 205-A–214 (Maine Unfair Trade Practices Act)

Contract notes

Third-party leases appear permitted (NEB/shared-DG framework accommodates third-party ownership). Standard written disclosure required before sale/lease beginning June 1, 2026 (35-A M.R.S. § 3218); NEB shared-financial-interest arrangements carry a 5-day rescission (35-A M.R.S. § 3209-A(5)(C)). Note: solar leases/PPAs for community solar vs. on-site — disclosure rules apply to on-site customer-side installations.

Enforcement watch: No Maine AG solar-company enforcement action 2024-2026 found. (LD1964 was prompted by rising consumer inquiries to the Public Advocate about solar providers.)

What to do next in Maine

  1. Check your deadline today. Maine gives you: 3 business days — 32 M.R.S.A. §§ 4661–4671 (Consumer Solicitation Sales Act; 2026 LD1964 expressly added solar energy equipment and NEB contracts to 'merchandise' under the Act); plus FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429 (3 business days, ≥$25 home sales).
  2. Send written notice before it expires. Certified mail, return receipt. Keep a copy of everything.
  3. Don't let them talk you out of it. "Wait and see" is how windows close. You can always re-sign later.
Get the notice written for you. The $39 SolarEscape Kit generates a cancellation letter citing 32 M.R.S.A. §§ 4661–4671 (Consumer Solicitation Sales Act), with your dates filled in — plus the complaint kit and bankrupt-installer playbook.
Not legal advice. This tool provides general information based on state statutes and the FTC Cooling-Off Rule as of October 2026. Laws change and every contract is different. For advice about your specific situation, talk to a consumer attorney or your state attorney general's office. We can't promise you can cancel — nobody can. What we do: tell you where the cancellation windows are, and what to do when they're closed.
