Oregon solar cancellation rights

3 business days — Oregon Home Solicitation Sales Act, ORS §§ 83.710–83.750 (buyer may cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing). If the seller failed to give the required notice/copy, the buyer may cancel indefinitely until the seller complies. FTC Cooling-Off Rule (16 CFR Part 429) also applies.

The law

  • ORS §§ 83.710–83.750 (Oregon Home Solicitation Sales Act — 3-business-day right to cancel; applies to personally solicited sales away from seller's place of business, including residential contractors)
  • ORS §§ 646.605–646.656 (Unlawful Trade Practices Act)
  • FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429

Contract notes

No solar-specific consumer statute located — cancellation rides on the home-solicitation act. Solar installers must be licensed by the Construction Contractors Board (CCB); CCB publication sets standard 3-business-day cancellation notice language.

Enforcement watch: No AG consumer-enforcement action on residential solar sales located for 2024–2026. (AG Rayfield joined the Oct 2025 multistate suit against EPA over Solar for All termination — a federal-funding dispute.) Note: Oregon Dept. of Energy's May 2026 Home Energy Rebates Consumer Protection Plan recommends a minimum 3-day post-signature wait before work begins.

What to do next in Oregon

  1. Read your contract's cancellation clause tonight. Compare it against the state window: 3 business days — Oregon Home Solicitation Sales Act, ORS §§ 83.710–83.750 (buyer may cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing). If the seller failed to give the required notice/copy, the buyer may cancel indefinitely until the seller complies. FTC Cooling-Off Rule (16 CFR Part 429) also applies.
  2. If the company never gave you a cancellation form, your federal 3-day clock may never have started — that's the loophole in our cooling-off guide.
  3. Past the window? Shift to the complaint path: where to file, and check whether savings were misrepresented (guide).
Get the notice written for you. The $39 SolarEscape Kit generates a cancellation letter citing ORS §§ 83.710–83.750 (Oregon Home Solicitation Sales Act — 3-business-day right to cancel; applies to personally solicited sales away from seller's place of business, including residential contractors), with your dates filled in — plus the complaint kit and bankrupt-installer playbook.

For advice about your specific situation, talk to a consumer attorney or your state attorney general's office. We can't promise you can cancel — nobody can. What we do: tell you where the cancellation windows are, and what to do when they're closed.
